Concan, Texas

Dear Friends:

Last month, we took a very short weekend trip to Concan, Texas. I would suggest that the best word to describe this area is "paradise". No, it's not tropical, but a little slice of Texas heaven. It's southwest of Austin, just at the southern tip of Texas Hill Country. The Frio River runs through the community, which is filled with RV parks and small cabin "resorts". It's popular for summer vacations, but I can't imagine that place in the heat of the Texas summer. October was a much better option, with gorgeous weather.  Concan is also surrounded by several state parks, making it a fun outdoor adventure destination.

We started our journey like you're supposed to, with a stop at Buc-ee's. It's important to fuel up for the long drive...

We arrived in the dark, so the next day was our first chance to see just how beautiful things looked:

We stayed in cabins that were large enough for our entire family. We traveled with dear friends and they had a cabin right next to us.

The cabin property sat right on the Frio River. There was an unusual river crossing area that also served as a great place to play in the water.  It's hard to describe. Basically, cars would have to drive through several inches of water on a cement barrier that also acted as a dam. However, when the water was this high, it acted more like a small waterfall:

While it made me a little nervous to have the kids that close to the cars - they absolutely loved it ; )

The cabin property was surrounded by trees and grass, giving us a fun place to run around and play. We had a cement patio just outside our cabin door, with a fire pit.

This was pretty much our natural state for several days:

 Just like every Boy Scout

We took a short drive to Gardner State Park, also on the Frio River. We discovered that Texas actually has mountains!! This meant that we had to climb them. The kids selected a pretty steep trail...it was quite a workout. L was sure to bring her butterfly net, just in case she found bugs to capture along the trail:

Visual proof that BYU and Utah can actually get along...

We returned to the river because that's exactly what you do. We spent quite a bit of time there. Some of it was lazily drifting on inner tubes, some of it was playing in the "falls", and other time was spent on a rope swing into the river:

The nights were spent around the fire pit. The temperatures certainly didn't mandate a fire, but our desire for s'mores certainly did!

On our last day, we decided to hold an Oreo Cookie Tournament. We matched-up several flavors of Oreos against each other. By the end, Cookie Butter Oreos were crowned the champions. And...we didn't want to eat any more cookies for a while ; )

Every once-in-a-while, I like to interview the kids. My older children remember tolerating this. The younger ones still humor me ; ) I leave you with G-Man and L talking about our little trip:
