Dear Friends:
While this isn't a blog post about a trip that I've taken, it's still all about some fun. This time, it was someone else's turn to visit us in Austin. It happened to be my folks! They have made a special effort to visit everyone in the family, even though we're spread out across the country. I'm so, so grateful that they made the effort - particularly for my youngest kids. I want them to have fond memories of grandparents, just like I did.
The kids decided to make a "welcome banner" to surprise our guests. It was really cute, as they came up with a plan for how to create the giant sign:
We made sure to take my folks to some of the best food destinations in Austin - perennial favorites that they've tried before. We started with Torchy's...of course:
It was warm in Austin, and the swimming pool was calling out to us. Grandma jumped into the pool with the kids, and they had a blast!
Mom caught this awesome action shot of L jumping into the pool. Yes, she's wearing here Disney Princess flippers and snorkel. She has no idea how to use a snorkel, but that doesn't slow her down one bit:
On another night, we hit Rudy's for some of the best BBQ in town. My dad has a special place in his heart for this place. They serve creamed corn that tastes just like his mother used to make. It's outstanding!
The gluttony tour couldn't just stop there. We wanted to introduce them to a new ice cream place in town that we really like. It's the Cow Tipping Creamery. A tiny little place that started as a food truck and they now have a small retail location. I mean, take a look at her face! Everyone loved it ; )
Back at the house, L wanted to share some of the fun projects that she's been doing. One involves water beads. L loves a lot of sensory play, and these are fun. They are basically tiny little beads the size of cupcake sprinkles. They absorb water to become much larger, squishy beads.
On Sunday, my folks came to church with us. It was SO FUN to sit with them in Sunday School, and share insights into scriptures and gospel doctrine. I forget just how amazing both of them are, and wish we could all go to church together every week!
That afternoon, G-Man had a special request for Grandpa - his famous fried chicken. I'm not joking, it's really good...and the kids love it. They actually wanted to help him in the kitchen...which is great, if we can pass this along to yet another generation!
They even created a special dance in honor of the fried chicken. Hilarious...
I even got a few pointers from the wise old man ; )
Grandma decided to try and entertain us with a little work on the pogo stick. It didn't last long ; )
Fortunately, they stayed an extra day as L had to have some surgery the next day. She needed to have tubes put in her ears again, to help with her hearing. In addition, they needed to remove her adenoids, as they were enlarged and starting to impede her breathing, especially while sleeping.
The surgery center was very kind and delivered her to the operating room in a red wagon ; ) She felt very special...
The surgery was a success and she has recovered quickly. She could actually breath through her nose in the recovery room, while fast asleep. We're grateful that everyone worked out OK.
We're also lucky that my folks could stay an extra day to help out...and they are always willing to pitch in wherever needed. I'm glad that they were also able to visit with my oldest son in Dallas, and get to know their great-grandkids a little better. We truly do have an awesome family.
