The last several posts will be all about our recent family vacation on a Disney Cruise to the Caribbean. The previous post can be found HERE.
Day 7 of the cruise found us at Disney’s private island in the Caribbean - Castaway Cay. This was an awesome day at the beach. To be honest, we could have stayed here for two days…it was that fun.
We arrived with a few clouds overhead, but the temperature was still nice. The area was beautiful, and the beaches were clean and easy to walk around. There were hundreds of umbrella chairs to relax in. I managed to get off the ship early and snagged some great seats right on the water, so we could watch the kids:
Here’s a little video clip that shows some of the fun we had at the beach:
The kids played in the sand the entire day. It was really their element. They worked together to build sand castles and generally had a blast:
We even swam out to some waterslides that were positioned close to shore. Everyone had fun sliding into the ocean…despite the really long lines.
At the end of the day, we sadly headed back to the ship…carrying lots of sand everywhere ; )
We had out last night on the ship. The waiters asked if they could take a picture with the kids, as they had fun playing around with G-Man and L each night. They loved the fact that both kids had politely ordered their own food and desserts each night.
The next day, we arrived back at Port Canaveral early in the morning. We sadly left the ship, and took our luggage all the way back to the airport on the Disney shuttle. We didn’t have flights until later that evening, so we decided to have some fun in Orlando. Since we had spent the last week practically as an amusement park at sea, we decided to do something different. We rented a car and drove to Cape Canaveral. I’m a huge fan of NASA, spaceflight and everything related, so I’m glad that the kids wanted to learn about that, too:
We went on a tour of the various launch pads around the Cape - where Apollo and space shuttle missions had been launched. We even got to see the pad where SpaceX is currently launching - and retrieving rockets. They are really pushing the private sector side of space travel. It was fun to see SpaceX prepping for an upcoming launch.
We arrived at another part of the base that house the famous Saturn V rockets and memorabilia from the Apollo missions. You just can’t understand how large these rockets are, until you’re standing near them…just awe-inspiring.
I was able to teach G-Man a little more about the stages of the rockets, and how the lunar lander and command capsule fit into the overall rocket:
Back at the main part of the base, we went to the space shuttle display…this is a newer exhibit:
nside, we watched movies about the shuttle missions, and then the doors opened to reveal the Atlantis space shuttle. Man, was I excited!!!
Inside, the kids played with a cockpit simulator. G-Man was exploring all of the buttons and switches. There were a lot of them…
The kids also got to play in a replica of the ISS (International Space Station) that was suspended high above the floor:
They ended with an understanding of the speed at which the shuttle travels, by sliding down a giant slide:
We loved out time at Cape Canaveral - and really loved the entire week that we spent together. It was a gift - the memories that we built with each other, and the fun we had just being together. I wish that we could have included more of our immediate family…but that will have to wait for another day.
Thanks so much for taking the time to read this!
