I had the opportunity to visit Melbourne, Australia in 2002. I was there to evaluate a potential game developer, and to address the Australian government on regional investment in game developers. I visited with a regional governor, and was invited to attend a game of Australian Rules Football. Now - you must understand that the Aussies are some of the most sports-crazed people on the planet. It almost doesn't matter what the sport is...there are Australians that love it. This particular sport happens to be a unique blend of soccer, rugby and a little dash of American football. It's really fun to watch. Here's a picture of the carnage:
Not for sissies...
I was lucky enough to have a couple of my employees with me - and we were treated to box seats. I made one of the few cultural blunders while talking to a small group at the game. I said - innocently - "what team are you rooting for?" My comment was met with raised eyebrows. I naturally assumed that you weren't supposed to talk about favorite teams, as it was an emotional issue. Someone whispered into my hear: "In Australia, the word 'rooting" means 'to have sex with' ". Yikes...I quickly changed my comment to "what team are you cheering for?" The answers were much better to that question.
Melbourne as a city is beautiful. There are many sports complexes and stadiums. I found it to be a really nice place to visit, if you've had your fill of Sydney. I will find time to write more about this amazing city.
